Here, the warrant is the assumption that more likeable candidates would have inspired greater turnout. We can see a claim and a support here, but the warrant is implicit. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still explore the implicit warrant in these cases.įor example, look at the following statement: Rhetorical statement Neither candidate was well liked voter turnout in the election was very low. Outside of quite formal argumentation, the warrant is often unstated-the author assumes their audience will understand the connection without it. The warrant is the logic or assumption that connects a support with a claim. These might range from hard evidence to emotional appeals-anything that is used to convince the reader to accept a claim. The author uses supports to back up each claim they make. Claims are usually explicitly stated, but they may also just be implied in some kinds of text. An argument might center on a single claim, or be built up out of many. These arguments are built up with claims, supports, and warrants.Ī claim is the fact or idea the author wants to convince the reader of. in a philosophy essay) or one that the reader has to infer (e.g. Claims, supports, and warrantsĪ piece of rhetoric is always making some sort of argument, whether it’s a very clearly defined and logical one (e.g. For example, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech has universal power, but the context of the civil rights movement is an important part of understanding why. Looking at the context can help to inform your rhetorical analysis. The context is everything surrounding the text: Who is the author (or speaker, designer, etc.)? Who is their (intended or actual) audience? When and where was the text produced, and for what purpose? In these cases, your analysis would focus on more than just language-you might look at visual or sonic elements of the text too. This could be, for example, a speech, an advertisement, or a satirical image. A text is whatever piece of communication you are analyzing. In rhetoric, a text is not necessarily a piece of writing (though it may be this). These three appeals are all treated as integral parts of rhetoric, and a given author may combine all three of them to convince their audience. This might involve speaking in a passionate way, employing vivid imagery, or trying to provoke anger, sympathy, or any other emotional response in the audience. Pathos, or the pathetic appeal, evokes the audience’s emotions. For example, someone making a moral argument might highlight their own morally admirable behavior someone speaking about a technical subject might present themselves as an expert by mentioning their qualifications. This is the dominant approach in academic writing, where arguments are built up using reasoning and evidence.Įthos, or the ethical appeal, involves the author presenting themselves as an authority on their subject. Logos, or the logical appeal, refers to the use of reasoned argument to persuade. Three central appeals are discussed in rhetoric, established by the philosopher Aristotle and sometimes called the rhetorical triangle: logos, ethos, and pathos. Appeals: Logos, ethos, pathosĪppeals are how the author convinces their audience. This section introduces a few of the key concepts of this field. Rhetoric, the art of effective speaking and writing, is a subject that trains you to look at texts, arguments and speeches in terms of how they are designed to persuade the audience. Frequently asked questions about rhetorical analysis. Your duty, your dharmam, and the purpose of the soul, is to love God.Ĥ. It’s by His Grace that you’re on this path. How it will bem how it will look, that’s your business. The soul is only subsevient to God. Ayana also means the goal: so the goal of the Soul is to become one with God, to attain God, to love God, but if you add Namo (not mine), the responsibility to attain the goal is not mine but His. God is infinitely close and infinitely far away.ģ. Just OM Namo Narayanaya shows the grand paradox of God. God is everything, and you can’t limit Him. Some say God is not this or that, but it doesn’t make sense, because you’re limiting Him. Some people say He is only Christ, He is only Krishna, He’s only Allah. God is beyond everything, you can’t limit Him at all. God does not care about any duality, about good and bad, because God is both and beyond both. He is intimately part of His creation, He is in every thought, every part of the body, every person in front of you, in your breath, in your heart. This is to show that God is smaller than the smallest, and bigger than the biggest. He who rests in the Soul, He who rests in His creation. That’s to remind us that we cannot control God, that we are so infinitely small.Ģ. Like looking at a mountain, you can’t conquer a mountain. This knowledge that God is beyond His creation is meant to invoke awe in us. God is still beyond that because He is not bound by His creation. Once talking to Guruji, he said, “No, creation is infinitive and God is creating new creation. You might think that creation had an end. That means that God is beyond creation, but creation is infinitive and is infinitely creating new creation, so God is infinitely beyond the infinite creation. Which means that God is present where other things are not present. Whatever you think of, big or small, God is already there, and even beyond it. This means that everything and everywhere at any time is God. The Atma rests inside God (all creation is inside God). Nara is the drop and Narayana is the ocean.ġ. The difference between the Soul and God is not in quality, but in quantity. Now, what is eternal in humans? It is the Soul, the Atma. Nara means also human, like Narasimha, which means Man-Lion. Whatever is eternal is Divine and the other way around, whatever is Divine is eternal. Nara means imperishable or eternal which is a quality of the Divine. “Namo” means also ‘I give my respect, my salutation’. For example, Om Namo Narayanaya and OM Narayana Namaha are both correct. It’s the same as Nama or Namaha, and it depends where the word is in the sentence (just grammatically). What does “OM” mean? ( >klick here) What does “Namo” mean? We are not subserviant to our lower self, we only belog to God. This is really nice, because that means that our soul doesn’t belong to our emotions, to our limited mind, to our body, to our desires, or to our karma, or to this world, but is ever free, it belongs only to God. So OM itself means the Atma belongs only to God, only to Lakshmi Narayana. And M comes from the Sanskrit word „Mah“, which means „mine“. M – stands for the Atma, because M is the 25th letter in the Sanskrit alphabet, and the 25th tattwa of creation (which means essence) is the Soul. U – means „only“ or it means Maha Lakshmi, because where Narayana is, Maha Lakshmi is also there. In our Sri Sampradaya, which is our Vaishnava tradition, the OM in Om Namo Narayanaya means:Ī – stands for Narayana, Maha Vishnu, because A is the first letter also in the Sanskrit alphabet, and as Jesus says that „I am the Alpha and the Omega, I am the first and the last“, so as A is first, Narayana is first, He is the first cause of everything. Keep in mind here that the Snaskrit OM sign is literally translated as AUM, however the pronunciation is OM. Silcence – Turya, the supreme Conciousness, beyond the Gunas. In the Vedas it is explaned like this: A-Brahma (rajas), U – Vishnu (sattvas), M – Shiva (tamas). As a means of humbling the ego, the Vedic tradition recommends reciting om namo narayanaya 108 times, twice a day for 40 days.OM itself is the primordial Consciousness, it’s Lakshmi Narayana, it’s Shiva Shakti, it’s the Oneness, and because it’s Oneness, each tradition can have its own interpretation. It is also a symbolic representation of our inner self.īENEFITS OF OM NAMO NARAYANAYA – 108 TIMESĬhanting this mantra leads to the experience of divine consciousness within us and a sense of deep eternal peace. Narayanaya : This word has complex roots – Nara means water and ‘Ayana’ means a resting place.NAMO : Namo is derived from sanskrit word ‘nam’ which means salutations or bowing down in gratitude.Cosmic Sound of ‘OM’ : The primordial sound vibration which encompasses all of the universe, energy and consciousness. This mantra is also known as Asthakshari Mantra and first appeared in the ‘Sama Veda’. "Nine games into his college career, Stephen Curry has made an impact," wrote The Charlotte Observer's Ron Green Jr. What has made Curry so successful in the NBA and makes him one of the best shooters in NBA history is what made him an immediate-impact player as a freshman at Davidson: his shooting and ability to be a team's primary option on offense. In a 73-70 win in which Charlotte Christian clinched a share of its conference title in 2005, Curry had a 15-point quarter, then he made two free throws to triple his team's lead from one point to three in the final seconds.Ĭurry grew about four inches and 30 pounds from the start of his junior year of high school to his freshman year of college, when he was 6-1, 180 pounds, but with a game that was even bigger than his frame. The son of a great NBA 3-point shooter chose Davidson over other Southern Conference and Big South schools.Ĭurry's explosive and clutch shooting performances were present in high school, too. "His basketball IQ is terrifically high for a senior in high school. "I really believe if you look at his career in four years, you'll be able to say he would've been able to play at a higher collegiate level," Telep said. Recruiting analyst Dave Telep noted Curry might be the best incoming freshman in the Southern Conference for the 2006-07 season. "The jump shot that reminds you of his sweet-shooting father - one of the best pure shooters in NBA history - well, that's always been there," Wertz wrote. It was also after his sophomore year when Curry worked on his form and the release point of his shot to make it more over his head like his father's. But as Curry developed, one part of his game was constant: his lethal shooting. "He's worked very hard in the summer and we're constantly on him to lead this team because he's got the ability and talent to do that and he's taken the bull by the horn." "He's more mature and he's blossoming and flourishing as a player," his high school coach, Shonn Brown, told The Charlotte Observer. Part of his growth was in the intangibles - things on the sideline and in between the ears. He had come a long way from the high school sophomore who said he didn't yet know his place on his team and wasn't totally comfortable playing heavy minutes. "He discovered his game was just as good as everyone else." To hear it from Curry himself: "I knew I could play with them before but after I went to these camps with the best players and did well, it gave me more confidence."Ĭurry was averaging 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists per game at the time the story was published and Wertz, the reporter, noted that Curry's handles were better and he was stronger against contact on drives to the hoop.Ĭurry was in more control. "And when he did, Curry had an epiphany," wrote The Charlotte Observer's Langston Wertz Jr. In December 2005, The Charlotte Observer wrote about Curry in a story headlined "Stephen Curry a chip off the old shot," a play on words in reference to his NBA father, with the subheadline: ""Ex-Hornets star's son now a complete player." In between his junior and senior years of high school, the younger Curry had traveled the country with his travel team (that was coached by his father), playing against top competition in Las Vegas and he also attended summer camps for top high schoolers. Dell Curry was an NBA veteran and a 3-point marksman who played for five different teams - most notably the Charlotte Hornets - during a 16-year professional career that came to an end in 2002. When Curry was a senior at Charlotte Christian School, he was still "Dell Curry's son." In fact, many viewed him through the lens of his father when he was in college, too. It turns out it isn’t the bird we thought it was. For now, what makes the Oxford dodo especially fascinating is its past. They aren’t, and the one at Oxford University Museum of Natural History is a one-off: it is the only one to preserve soft tissues, and hence could one day be used to “de-extinct” the dodo and undo what those hungry Dutch sailors set in motion more than 400 years ago. Like many people, I had assumed that dodo specimens were two a penny. My first sighting of a dodo came earlier this year in Oxford, UK, and I very much noticed and cared. At the time, nobody much noticed or cared. The last recorded sighting of the bird, now known as the dodo, was in 1662. Its chicks and eggs had been predated remorselessly by invasive rats, cats, dogs and pigs, and its habitat on the once-pristine paradise of Mauritius was destroyed. Within a century, however, it was no more. The walghvogel, meaning “tasteless bird”, was off the hook – for now. They killed and ate some, but the meat was no good, so they killed and ate some parrots and pigeons instead. The crew put ashore and discovered an abundance of wildlife, including “a great quantity of foules twise as bigge as swans”. IN 1598, a squadron of Dutch ships landed on an uninhabited island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The scientists then used these lines to estimate the time that other events happened to the bird.Despite its eventful existence, the Oxford specimen is the only dodo with preserved soft tissues. The dodo bones show repeated lines of arrested growth, which the researchers suggest correspond to the harsh conditions of the summer months when the birds were starved of food. A stormy summer seasonĪccording to evidence in the different layers and types of tissue of the 22 bones examined, the dodo seems to have adapted its lifestyle to Mauritius's stormy summer, from November to March.ĭuring this period, heavy rain and strong winds can strip trees of leaves, flowers and fruit, causing severe food shortages for the island's animals. Some sailors' accounts have survived, but they are often limited or unreliable - seamen tended to spin their dodo-sighting tales for dramatic effect rather than scientific accuracy. The dodo died out within a century after Dutch explorers arrived on Mauritius in the late 1500s, so little evidence has been left behind of what it really looked like or how it lived. Dodos were about 3 feet tall and had grayish-brown plumage. They were also quite heavy, weighing up to 20 kg. Dodos were unable to fly because they had small wings and their legs were short and stout. 'So I was very pleased when the UCT team contacted me to say they had been given some more dodo bones to analyse and they wanted to team up.' The Dodo was a large, flightless bird that was native to the island of Mauritius. 'But it wasn't quite enough evidence to make any strong conclusions about dodo lifestyles. The researchers were initially reluctant to cut up the exceptionally rare dodo bones from the Museum's historic collections.ĭr Steel says, 'Luckily, recent excavations in Mauritius provided us with a few broken bones that could be sacrificed. This is a breakthrough for Dr Lorna Steel, senior curator at the Museum, who began the work around a decade ago. They also used information about the lifestyle of birds that still live on Mauritius. Researchers from the Museum and the University of Cape Town (UCT) combined evidence from the bones with the historical accounts of sailors that visited Mauritius, the birds' home. I would show the dodo to my friends so they can become known around town. Scientists examining the structure of the birds' bones have found new information about how quickly dodos grew, when they laid eggs and when they moulted. Id have a team of students join me and protect the dodo birds by putting them. Check out the updated schedule… Soil Improvement for Trees Signups are available in advance of each event.
